History
History
De Borcht, popularly called Castle d’Erp, was built around 1200. It consists of three wings around an inner courtyard, with a gate tower on the northwest side. Its oldest mention dates from 1326. It was then a fief of the Hertog van Gelre. A fire in 1578 caused extensive damage, but Sybert van Eyll make sure the ruin was restored from 1598 onwards. The castle has an eventful history, including sieges by William of Orange and his son Frederik Hendrik. After occupancy by the Van Montfoort, Van Eyll, Van Laer, De Bierens and Van Erp families, the former municipality of Maasbree became the owner in 1961. A thorough restoration followed. Since 1993 it has been in private hands again.
